I was getting a few display anomalies which was one of the reasons I opted to make my own, plus the experience and knowledge you get from creating something like this is extremely valuable. I've implemented a similar editor in both Java and C++ available from http://mapeditor.org/, and its purpose is to be generally useful for any tile based game.
